David grew up in Indiana, a state not associated in any way with wine production or consumption, other than Boone's Farm or Mad Dog 20-20. He attended Indiana University and graduated with a degree in Geology. As a summer job he worked in northern Michigan as a trail guide and riding instructor at a popular Guest Ranch.
His interest in horses continued after graduation as he remained in the business for 25 years in Michigan, Arizona, and Washington State, managing horse properties such as breeding farms, boarding and training facilities, and horse estates. In 2002 he, along with his wife Ruth and 2 sons, moved to Whidbey Island. Through a mutual friend he was introduced to Frank Rayle, owner and proprietor of Greenbank Cellars.
